Harness the Power of Digital Technology for an In-Demand Career

According to Ad Age, two-thirds of global advertising revenue now comes from digital marketing. As a Digital Marketing major, you will learn the strategies needed to develop thoughtful digital marketing plans, the skills to develop winning cross-platform campaigns, and the knowledge to analyze the results. You鈥檒l learn how to reach audiences through storytelling via the devices consumers use the most鈥攖heir phones, computers, and tablets.

You鈥檒l also learn valuable research skills to help inform your work, including how to look past the inherent biases in today鈥檚 data sets to avoid marginalizing your audience. You鈥檒l develop an understanding of how to use big data and AI in your marketing work to be sure you鈥檙e prepared for the fast-changing marketing landscape with tools you can use well into the future.

Digital Marketing majors have access to state-of-the-art tools to help them create in a wide range of formats. Our Media Creation Studio is available to students to produce original video and audio works from beginning to end- recording, producing, and editing work for classes and your portfolio.

Social Responsibility in the Digital Sphere

In addition to learning practical skills, you鈥檒l also dig into the history of digital marketing to understand ethics and social responsibility, equipping you to build marketing campaigns that are inclusive and appealing. Digital marketing students gain a global perspective and are required to either study abroad or complete an internship- valuable lived experience that will shape your Saint Michael鈥檚 experience and your future career. The combination of a focus on ethics and a global perspective will help you make connections to inform your work.

In Depth

Digital Marketing students will delve into three key areas of study. The Digital Marketing core classes are the foundation of the program, including coursework on strategy and analytics and social media marketing. The senior capstone requirement is also part of the core offerings, where students plan and create a complete digital marketing campaign to demonstrate the skills acquired over the course of your college experience.

Students will also take Digital Media and Communications Foundations classes that provide the global perspective and broaden your knowledge of marketing skills with classes including Global Communication & Culture and Digital Film/Video.

Foundational to the Digital Marketing experience is the opportunity for students to travel abroad and/or engage in an internship. You can choose a semester-long or summer study abroad experience; a short-term, faculty-led study trip; or an international or domestic internship. With so many options, you鈥檒l be able to choose a path that makes sense for you and your future while still getting the complete Saint Michael鈥檚 experience.

Additionally, you鈥檒l choose three depth or breadth electives in digital marketing strategy, content creation, or project management. These courses are designed to help you hone your craft even further based on your passions, interests, and career aspirations.

Throughout your classes, you will create a portfolio of work that demonstrates your passions and interests and the skills you鈥檝e learned in developing content, analyzing data, writing, and strategy. Seniors are required to produce a capstone project, typically a full marketing campaign that demonstrates all the skills you have acquired over your college career.

Experiential Learning

A core belief of the Digital Marketing program is that students should gain a global and/or cross-cultural perspective. All Digital Marketing majors are required to do a semester or summer abroad, a shorter faculty-led study trip; an international Freeman Foundation internship (or equivalent), or a domestic internship. These experiences are intended to prepare you for your digital marketing career and to foster greater understanding across cultural boundaries and teach you about digital marketing approaches and how they differ when addressing local, national, and international audiences.

Digital Marketing students have studied abroad in countries as diverse as Morocco, Ghana, Bhutan, Thailand, France, Italy, Costa Rica, South Korea, Japan, Spain, Argentina, South Africa, Samoa, Indonesia, and Jordan.
