Studying abroad in the midst of a pandemic: Iceland

October 6, 2021
By Laura Hardin '22

The last academic year was full of uncertainty for the Saint Michael鈥檚 College community. However, a few of the members in our community decided to amplify the unpredictability by studying abroad in midst of the pandemic. Olivia Hansen, class of 2022, was among the few who were able to study abroad their junior year in the spring of 2021.

While the Vermont-based School of International Training (SIT) canceled most of its spring 2021 programs due to the pandemic, Olivia Hansen鈥檚 program in Iceland allowed students to transfer from other canceled programs to this new opportunity since it was able to continue.

Happily, Hansen, an environmental science major from Valley Falls, NY, was able to study abroad in the country of her original choice — unlike Alexyah Dethvongsa 鈥22, the student-experience described in the first of this series on last year鈥檚 Saint Michael鈥檚 study-abroad adventures. Dethvongsa had to study India鈥檚 health care from nearby Nepal after the India program鈥檚 last-minute cancellation.

Yet like Dethvongsa, Hansen filled her days with experiential learning. 鈥淢any of my days were spent traveling,鈥 Hansen said. 鈥淚 can describe my days in three phases:

  • Phase one began after quarantine and all the students moved in with our host families in the rural town of 脥safj枚r冒ur. This is located in the Westfjords of Iceland. We stayed with our host families and attended the local university for a month.鈥 Hansen explained that a typical school day went from 9AM to 3PM. The afternoons were spent hiking, shopping, knitting, or spending time with her host family. 鈥淭his first month was the only time I actually attended formal classes,鈥 she said.
  • 鈥淔or the next month I was on the move all around Iceland. This could be considered as phase two,鈥 she said. 鈥淚n three vans my group traveled the entire length of Ring Road. This road encircles Iceland. It was during this time I got to witness the incredibly beauty of Iceland from Volcanos to Glaciers.鈥
  • Lastly, 鈥渋n phase three was my independent study period. During this time, I got to pick anywhere in Iceland to live and study for the last month of the program,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 chose to stay at a small sheep farm in the South of Iceland due to its location at the base of the largest glacier in Iceland Vatnaj枚kull.鈥

鈥淚 studied the nutrient loads present in glacial deposition for my project. It was equal parts challenging and fulfilling to enact a scientific study completely on my own in a foreign country,鈥 Hansen said.聽 From the moment she stepped off the plane to the moment she boarded her flight home, she said, Hansen was never truly alone during her time in Iceland.

As Olivia has noted on her photo, this is the famous ice diamond beach in Iceland.

鈥淭he 22 students had to quarantine in pairs and during this time we all became acquainted,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 think this might be an experience unique to SIT programs, because the programs are focused on a group of students learning together.鈥

For this reason, Hansen highly recommends that underclassmen take the risk and study abroad even when circumstances in the world pose certain obstacles as for her and others during the pandemic. 鈥淎s a generally introverted person I always thought I鈥檇 be the last person to take the risk of going abroad,鈥 she said. 鈥淥n a campus like Saint Michael鈥檚 it鈥檚 incredibly easy to get comfortable and settle in, and while that鈥檚 comfortable, it sometimes can keep you from pushing yourself to your true potential.鈥

鈥淲hile abroad I met the most amazing people, tried so many new and exciting foods, and discovered an independence and strength I never knew I possessed,鈥 Hansen said. 鈥淚鈥檇 recommend study abroad to anyone and everyone because it really does have the ability to change your perception of yourself and globalize your world view.鈥
