John F. Coughlan “Jack” of Onset, MA, formerly of Duxbury, passed away peacefully at home after a long illness on July 31, 2025, the same day his brother-in-law, Dennis Sullivan, passed.
Jack was born on August 23, 1940, to John and Kathaleen (Kelleher) Coughlan. He grew up in Abington and attended Boston College High School and St. Michael鈥檚 College in Vermont. After graduating from college, he joined the National Guard, and around the same time, he married the love of his life, Judy, whom he met at the beach in Scituate. Jack worked many years in the computer field as a system analyst, writing software for large companies, such as RCA, Sheraton, and Honeywell. He later founded his own software company, which worked with various clients, including Housing Authorities, boat yards, and barcoding of hospital records. After his retirement, he became a long-time volunteer and board member for The Boys and Girls Club of Wareham and New Bedford, where he won several prestigious awards for his service.
Jack was a coach for his children鈥檚 recreational teams and was involved in many of the family activities, and was 鈥淐aptain Jack鈥 to his grandchildren, enjoying spending valuable time with them. He loved sailing, golfing, traveling, playing the piano, and running his model trains. He was very easy-going, loved to laugh, was kind to all he met, and gave very generously of his time to his family, friends, and many young people.
Jack is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judy; daughter, Elaine Gifford (Alan) of Onset; sons, John of Quincy and Gregory of Salem, OR; five grandchildren, Sean, Dillon, Kayra, Randall, and Ethan; sister, Clare Sullivan of Brooklin, Maine; sister-in-law, Elaine Warren (David) of Sandwich and AZ; many nieces and nephews; and long-time friends. He was predeceased by his sisters, Mary Joan O鈥機onnor and Kathleen Mays, and brother-in-law, Thomas O鈥機onnor.
