Saint Michael鈥檚 College and WCAX are awarding scholarships to prospective students who demonstrate compassion for others through service 鈥� a value shared by both organizations.听

Three students will听receive听a听$20,000 scholarship听to attend Saint Michael鈥檚 College, as part of the partnership, and then St. Mike鈥檚 will honor a $20,000 discount for the next three years for winners.听That鈥檚听an $80,000 scholarship over four years.听To be considered, students听must听submit听an essay detailing听their community service听and apply to Saint Michael鈥檚 College.听

Partners in听Service听

St. Mike鈥檚 and听WCAX听are excited to offer these scholarships to local students as the partners听share a commitment to serving the community and developing future leaders听passionate about听giving back.听听

St. Mike鈥檚 was听established听in 1904听by the听Society of Saint Edmund听鈥� a Catholic order听of priests听dedicated to听service and听social justice.听Today鈥檚 students follow in听the听Edmundites鈥櫶齦ong legacy of altruism,听which听has听included听feeding, healing, and promoting voter rights for the Black community of Selma, Alabama,听during the Civil Rights Movement, among other acts of service听around the globe.听

St.听Mike鈥檚听provides听ample opportunities听for听students to听engage in听volunteerism听through its听Mobilization of Volunteer Efforts听(MOVE) organization, public service as emergency responders through the听,听global citizenship听through distinguished听study abroad programs, and听training听for careers in听humanitarian aid听and diplomacy through the听Peace Corps听and听the听U.S. State Department.听These programs augment the value of human听kindness imparted to all St. Mike鈥檚 students.听

This scholarship opportunity comes as St.听Mike鈥檚听expands its efforts to make its private liberal arts-based education accessible to a wider number of students. This听fall, Saint Michael鈥檚 College launched its听 initiative for prospective students living out of state and several other initiatives for Vermonters, including the UVM Match and free tuition for Vermonters听whose annual household income is under $100,000.听听

鈥淪ervice and access to education are two values deeply embedded in our College鈥檚 DNA,鈥� said Saint Michael鈥檚 College President Richard Plumb.听鈥淥ur students graduate with the skills, professionalism, and empathy needed to take on problems both big and small听鈥� something the world needs now more than ever.听Scholarships like these being offered through our partnership with WCAX help put our transformative education within reach for all prospective students.鈥澨�听

In addition to providing听42听hours听of local news coverage each week to Vermonters,听as well as听northern New Yorkers and New Hampshirites,听WCAX听also sponsors听dozens of听community events, including the听Vermont Annual听Spelling Bee held at Saint Michael鈥檚 College.听听

鈥淲hen the opportunity to partner with Saint Michael’s College to provide scholarships for local students developed, it was the perfect chance for WCAX to serve our community directly by helping local students find a path to higher education,鈥� said Jay Barton, Vice President and General Manager of WCAX.听听

Scholarship Details听

Students interested in听the scholarship听should听submit听a short essay (250 to 650听words) describing their commitment to community service and the ways their efforts have created meaningful impact or positive change. Eligible students include those within the WCAX Channel 3 viewing area听from听Vermont and parts of New Hampshire who are applying as incoming fall 2026听Saint Michael鈥檚 College听students.听Contest entrants can get a code to apply听for听free to听St. Mike鈥檚 on the contest page on the WCAX website.听

Essay submissions should be made to WCAX at听 between听November 10,听2025, and听February 21, 2026.听Saint听Michael鈥檚 College will choose the three scholarship winners,听and the announcement will听be made by听WCAX in mid-March, coinciding with March Madness excitement.听

For winners, scholarship money may be applied to St. Mike鈥檚 tuition, as well as room and board costs,听and comprehensive fees. Other scholarships may be combined with this offer,听up to the total amount for these three expense categories.听Overflow听scholarship听funds听cannot听be converted to cash.听听
