听chair and professor of mathematics, participated in the Fall 2014 Vermont Council of Mathematics Teachers (VCTM) annual conference held at Saint Michael鈥檚 on Oct.17. The theme of the conference was 鈥淭eaching Mathematics Today.”

听instructor of applied linguistics, has been invited to give a keynote presentation via Webinar to a group of 55 teachers at the Universidad de la Sabana in Bogota, Colombia, on Dec. 2. The topic is 鈥淟anguage learning with flipped ELT classrooms and mobile devices.鈥�

,听associate professor of political science, recently was named a Fellow at the Mark S. Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies at the University of Toronto.听 The appointment does not require residency, but does mean Michael will be working with other fellows on programming at the Centre.

Umit Boz,听instructor of Applied Linguistics, co-authored an article with faculty from University at Albany and University of Missouri, which was published in the journal听Research in Science and Technological Education听in August 2014.

听assistant professor of sociology, on Oct. 1 presented his gang research at the Boston College Sociology Department Lunch Series. From October 16-18, Robert was featured presenter at a workshop in Guatemala City; he also recently presented papers at conferences, and was panelist at a Catholic University program in the nation鈥檚 capital.

Katie Chang,听research technician with Vermont EPSCoR鈥檚 Center for Workforce Development and Diversity, presented a poster on land use and water quality at the Vermont Monitoring Cooperative annual meeting, held at UVM in December.

听assistant professor of fine arts/art, had artwork exhibited in a show titled “Picture Books” at the Power Plant Gallery at Duke University from Sept. 9 – Nov 7, 2014.

听assistant professor of biology, is co-author with some colleagues of a paper about sea otter dental enamel and its high resistance to chipping, published this fall in the journal听Biology Letters听by Royal Society Publishing.

听professor and chair of History, has learned that his essay, 鈥淭he Church as Lord,鈥� has just been published in听The Oxford Handbook of Medieval Christianity. He also presented a paper this summer at the Vermont Medieval Summit and is invited to contribute an essay on teaching Dante for a series.

听professor of English, has poems in a recent issue of听Atlantic;听along with work in publications including听Stony Thursdays听and听The Irish Times听in recent months. Also, he has poems coming in several anthologies, and was to give a reading at Holy Cross.

听Distinguished Scholar in Residence (American Studies), translated听Other Letters to Milena / Otras cartas a Milena, a mixed genre book by Cuban writer Reina Mar铆a Rodr铆guez, which will be released by the University of Alabama Press in December.听 Kristin also wrote the critical introduction to the book.

听assistant professor of fine arts (music), recently wrote a piece for the Sunday听Burlington Free Press听about his part in a music tour of China coordinated by Vanderbilt and Ohio State universities through the U. S. State Department. Dubbed “The U.S.-China Center Traveling Folksong Revival Workshop,” the two-week tour 鈥� Oct. 9-23 鈥� gathered five scholar-musicians, Bill included, with personal connections to America’s folk revival of the 1950s and 1960s.

听associate professor of applied linguistics, was a featured speaker at the Korea TESOL Conference, Oct.4-5 in Seoul, Korea.听 His presentation, 鈥淭he 鈥楩ront Tier鈥� of Pronunciation:听 A Right-side-up Approach,鈥� emphasized the importance of suprasegmental features of pronunciation and incorporated projects created by students of Saint Michael鈥檚 College鈥檚 Intensive English Program.

听professor of political science, presented a paper titled 鈥淏eyond Structure-as-Institutions:听 A Critical Approach to Studying the Modern Presidency,鈥� at the annual meeting of the Northeastern Political Science Association, Boston, MA, November 13-15, 2014. Bill also delivered a paper on fly fishing in Montana, in September.

听professor of religious studies, is author of a chapter, “Faith and Reason,鈥� in听The Cambridge Companion to Augustine, ed. by Eleonore Stump and David Meconi (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2014). He also presented several recent papers at conferences.

听associate professor of psychology, recently had a paper that he co-authored with five Saint Michael鈥檚 students accepted for publication in the journal听Psychopharmacology.

听associate professor of fine arts, music, is the editor of the recently published 鈥淩alph Vaughan Williams, Richard II: Incidental Music for a Radio Production.鈥� According to the听Promethean Editions Composers and Repertoire听online database, this 1944 orchestral work by Williams to accompany a radio production of the Shakespeare play is being published for the first time.

Nicole Mombell,听assistant professor of modern languages & literature (Spanish), recently had an article accepted for publication: 鈥淩e-Membering War: Javier Cercas鈥檚 Soldados de Salamina and La velocidad de la luz as Prosthetic Memory, in听Letras Hispanas 10.2听(Forthcoming). Nicole also will make a conference presentation in Portland, Oregon, February 2015.

听associate professor of economics, had a journal article, “Shifting Economics: Fundamental Questions and Amartya K. Sen’s Pragmatic Humanism,” published in the听Journal of Philosophical Economics, Vol VIIII Issue 1 Autumn 2014. Tara also is currently editing a special issue of the peer-reviewed journal听Forum for Social Economics.

听professor of English and American Studies and chair of English, gave an invited talk, 鈥淎pocalypse Then: A Certain Tendency in Some Key Sixties Counterculture Films,鈥� at the Center for Marxist Education, Cambridge, MA, on. Oct. 23. He also presented papers at several recent film conferences.

听assistant professor of business administration and accounting, is author of a paper, 鈥淯se of Positive Psychology to Enhance the Undergraduate Business Internship Experience,鈥� recently accepted for publication in the听Journal of the Academy of Business Education (JABE).

听assistant professor of history, is author of a paper that was published in听Women鈥檚 History Review听in November; she also presented a paper at the Northeastern Conference on British Studies in October.

听Chair of the Education Department, contributed two presentations at the August, 2014 World Congress of the International Society for Education through Art in Melbourne, Australia.

听instructor of philosophy, is invited panelist for a roundtable discussion, 鈥淭he Legacy of World War I: 100 Years After,鈥� moderated by George Dameron, history professor and director of the Humanities Center, with colleagues from other disciplines, on Dec 2 on campus. Patrick also has been very busy with countless other scholarly and community enterprises.

Carrie Williams Howe,听executive director of Vermont Campus Compact (hosted by Saint Michael鈥檚 College) has had an article accepted in听The International Journal of Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement.听 The article, 鈥淪tudent Development and Service-Learning: A Three-Phased Model for Course Design,鈥� will appear in the November, 2014 issue.听 Written in collaboration with former colleagues at the University of Vermont, and as a part of Carrie鈥檚 doctoral dissertation, the article explores how academic service-learning courses that are designed with student development in mind can help to make courses/projects more successful for students, faculty, and their community partners.听 Carrie will teach a class at Saint Michael鈥檚 for spring semester.
